A dramatic example of Modernist design, Gorham's No. 791" tea set, commonly identified as "Hibiscus, seems to take its inspiration from early 20th century Danish style as associated with Georg Jensen.

Offered as a four piece set - the pot stands 6" tall to the top of the finial, has a main body that is 4" at the widest, 5" to the end of the spout, and has a sterling and ebony handle that extends 4 1/4" at a slight upward cant from the body. It weighs 14.33 T.

And has a capacity of 1 1/2 pints, as stamped on the underside. It has a rimmed base, an upward pointed, tapered, spout, and a lid with a sleeve fitting.

Marks are "Gorham, " "lion, anchor, G, " "Sterling, " "791, " a date symbol for 1942, "1 1/2 Pint, " and a small 18. " The "18" repeats on the lip of the lid, which is also stamped "Sterling. The sugar bowl measures 4" tall and 3 1/4" at its widest, weighing 5.32 ozt.

The creamer measures 3 tall and holds 5/16 pint as stated on the bottom, as well as #793. Weight is 3.93 ozt. The round handled tray measures 11 1/2 handle to handle, and weighs 15.69 troy ounces. The set in total weighs approx 39 troy ounces. Marked on the bottom like the others, but numbered #794.

The defining element of the design, and the detail from which the piece takes its name, is the three-dimensional, cast and applied, hibiscus blossom set on the center top of the lid. This is intricately detailed and has a hand-hammered finish. It is in choice condition, free of any dents, scratches, or marring.

The wooden handle fits snugly and is without splits, chips, or discoloration. It has been recently polished, but will need to be buffed up upon arrival to your home.
