Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Tea Time Cutlery Set, C. W. Fletcher. S'field, 1913

  

This is an unusual cased Art Nouveau Sterling Silver "teatime" set including Butter Knives, Teaspoons and Sugar Tongs all in a single case. The teaspoons and sugar tongs are Sterling Silver whilst the butter knives have Sterling Silver handles and steel blades. The Art Nouveau design is very elegant with a flower edge on the stems and handles and a floral motif on each end.

The teaspoons are double struck with a thread and floral decoration on the underside of the stems. The set was made in Sheffield by C. Fletcher & Sons Ltd and dates to just before World War One in 1913. Condition on the spoons and tongs is very good with no dings or dents and only very minimal wear. The knife handles are generally good with just some minor wear and a couple of very tiny dings.

The knife blades are showing signs of wear but are still perfectly functional. The hallmarks on the teaspoons and tongs are on the underside of the bowl, whilst on the butter knives they are at the top of the handle just before the collar. They are clearer to read on the spoons and tongs than on the knife handles but those are also easily decipherable. The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the gothic date letter "v" for 1913 and the C. F makers' mark for C.

W, Fletcher & Sons Ltd. The teaspoons are 11cm long, the tongs are 10.6cm long and the butter knives are 18cm long.
