Absolutely exquisite & rare antique Victorian era English hallmarked sterling silver & silver plate 4pc coffee & tea set including sterling coffee pot, silver-plate tea pot, creamer & sugar pot, all with fantastic figural mascaron & bird spouts, ornate acanthus, floral & tendril accented bodies & spouts and figural bird finials on the coffee & tea pots! A full-sized set, too, with both the coffee and tea pots holding 48 fluid ounces each. An interesting set on all accounts, the ornate styling is really second to none but an odd characteristic of the set is that only the taller coffee pot is sterling silver, the remaining three pieces, although perfect matches, are silver plated. All bear the silversmith marks of Martin, Hall & Company of Sheffield, England, three with the EPNS for Electo-Plated Nickel Silver and the one with sterling hallmarks and date mark for 1856. I found the exact set online for sale out of England and they refer to the pattern as Louis. MARTIN, HALL & CO LTD (successors of JOHN ROBERTS - ROBERTS & HALL - MARTIN, HALL & CO). The origin of the firm is in the partnership established in 1820 in Sheffield by Henry Wilkinson and John Roberts who traded as Wilkinson & Roberts. Wilkinson left the business in 1836 and in 1846 John Roberts entered in partnership with Ebenezer Hall (his apprentice in 1836) under the style Roberts & Hall. In 1854 entered into the partnership Richard Martin (of Martin Brothers & Naylor) and Joshua Hall (brother of Ebenezer Hall) under the style Martin, Hall & Co.

In 1866 the firm was converted into a Ltd. The factory was active at Shrewsbury Works, Broad Street Park, Sheffield with showrooms in London (where they were listed as manufacturing silversmiths and electroplated manufacturers, silver, plated and steel cutlers), Sydney, Birmingham and Glasgow. The firm participated to the 1851 Great Exhibition, the Internation Exhibition (1862), the Sydney Exhibition (1879), the Melboune Exhibition (1881) and the 1915 British Industries Fair.

Besides its sterling silver and electroplated items the firm had a successful cheap line of production on a patented white metal called "Martinoid". Items made by Martin, Hall & Co were retailed by Wordley & Co - Liverpool, Ball & Edwards - Birmingham, Henry Ellis & Son - Exeter, Charles Nephew & Co - Calcutta, West & Son - Dublin, Goldsmiths Alliance Ltd - Cornhill, Pearce & Co - Leeds, Mappin Brothers - London, George Edward & Sons - Glasgow, James Aitchinson - Edinburgh, Mackay & Chisholm - Edinburgh and many other firms. A truly stunning ensemble and, although we with all four pieces were sterling silver, all are truly beautiful grouped and displayed and, of course, perfect for use. Impress yourself and guests with this magnificent English service and enjoy!

As noted, only the coffee pot is sterling silver, the other three hallmarked silver-plate and all by the same silversmith, Martin, Hall & Company. No damage, repair or flaws that I can see to the sterling coffee pot. The silver-plate pieces are all in great shape, too, with no dents, damage or repairs though there is some loss to the silver-plating in some raised decoration areas.

The most visible spot of silver loss is on the lid of the tea pot. See pictures for all individual weights and measurements.
