Christofle 4 Pc Silver Plated Tea/Coffee Set designed byChristian Fjerdingstadt
The design of this contemporary coffee and tea set is based on the brands original 1933 Art Deco motif by the renowned silversmith Christian Fjerdingstadt (1891 1968) for the first class passengers aboard the French Lines S. Normandie, which was widely recognized as the most luxurious ocean liner to ever set sail.
Like its forebears, the individual pieces combine silver plate and fine ebony. They incorporate the liners aesthetic preference for clean uncluttered lines with a tende. Ncy for strong geometric shapes and a predilection for unusual combination of materials.
The influence of cubism, then at its peak in all decorative arts, is obvious in the unusual design of this set. Is a contemporary take on the Tonnelet tea service.Christian Fjerdingstad is recognized as one of the greatest Art Deco silversmith-designers, his collaboration with Christofle began in 1921 and lasted for 20 years. In this contemporary design, based on variations of the circle, the Art Deco heritage is unmistakable - and, just as Fjerdingstad loved to do, it combines silver beautifully with ebonized wood, its sleek lines and robust-yet-refined form focusing attention. Her novel design and lavish interiors led many to consider her the greatest of ocean liners. She held the "Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing at several points during her service career".
The luxurious interiors were designed in Art Deco and Streamline Moderne style. Drawings and photographs show a series of vast public rooms of great elegance. Teapot: L 8-1/4 x H 6-7/8 x D 2-1/4. Sugar Bowl: L 3-13/16 x H 4-3/8 x D 2-13/16. Creamer: L 6 x H 4-3/8 x D 2-13/16.
